If you like to know more – curiosities for connoisseurs

Pink Earl Grey Piag Tea is truly unique.

It combines the aromatic depth of Darjeeling black tea with a floral hint of rose and the citrusy brightness of bergamot. This tea comes from India, grown at elevations above 2,000 meters. Darjeeling is one of the most prized – and most expensive – teas in the world, celebrated for its delicate, sweet character. Only the highest-quality leaves are used, harvested during the second flush. After picking, the leaves are carefully fermented and infused with natural bergamot oil, a fruit native to Southern Europe. Finally, red rose petals are added, giving the tea a beautiful color and a romantic touch.

If you enjoy tea tales

Earl Grey, Earl Grey – but what does the name really mean, and where does it come from?

As with most legends, there are many versions – and no one can say which one is true. But isn’t that the charm? Stories, even if they never happened, are worth telling. After all, reflecting on their authenticity adds an extra layer of pleasure to the very cup of tea we’re holding.

So, where does the name Earl Grey come from? Let’s dive into one of the stories.

The first tale

Meet the main character of this version: Charles Grey, a respected statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain in the 1830s. Charles Grey also held the noble title of Earl—and so, the name Earl Grey begins to take shape. But where’s the tea? We’re missing the second protagonist. That’s where the legend comes in.

If told by a wise old Chinese sage, the story might begin like this:

One day, the brave Charles Grey saved a boy from drowning in a raging river. The boy turned out to be the son of a wealthy mandarin. As a reward for saving his only child, Grey was gifted a chest of tea infused with fragrant bergamot oil. And so, in honor of the Earl, this extraordinary tea was given the name we know today: Earl Grey.

But of course, this isn’t the only version of the story…

The second tale

Close your eyes and picture a ship sailing across the sea. The sun is shining, the water is calm—but just a few days earlier, the weather was merciless. A heavy storm had soaked most of the cargo on board: crates filled with tea. When the sailors noticed the damp leaves beginning to spoil and smell musty, they decided to mask the odor by adding bergamot oil. And that’s how the tea was saved.

But does this explain the name Earl Grey? Not at all.

The third tale

Some say this special tea was created by order of the Earl himself. Others believe it was his wife who inspired its creation, being a true tea connoisseur. According to legend, the water at their estate was of particularly poor quality. To make the tea more pleasant to drink, she requested a blend with an added aroma that would balance the taste. In her honor, another variation of Earl Grey was later named Lady Grey—distinguished from the original by the addition of delicate cornflower petals.

Which story speaks to you most?

We enjoy them all. After all, each tale—whether fact or legend—adds a touch of magic to every cup of Earl Grey.
